SPADO Commemorates 12th Anniversary Of The Mine Ban Treaty

Tuesday, 1 March 2011 marks 12th anniversary of the Mine Ban Treaty. This treaty was signed on September the 3rd, 1997 in Ottawa Canada and on March 1, 1999 this treaty became International law. This law demands a complete ban on the production, use, stockpiling and trade of mines.

SPADO being the official contact point of ICBL (
International Campaign to Ban Landmine) and CMC (Cluster Munitions Coalition) appeals to all major Mine producing countries to become signatory to Mine Ban Treaty. To commemorate the day, SPADO will advocate the importance of signing of this treaty with various foreign missions in Islamabad, including United States of America, by writing letters to the concerned authorities. SPADO will also be commemorating the UN day for mine awareness and assistance in mine action on April 4, 2011. The planned activities for the day include seminar in higher educational institutions, walk, editorial writing, press release and writing letters again to all those missions who are yet to sign the treaty.

SPADO will also like to use the 1st of March occasion to pay rich tributes to late Diana, the princess of Wales, who championed the Ottawa Treaty.
