June 15, 2010: Training Organized for Media Representatives on Landmines/ERW Risks Awareness in District Malakand - Swat


As part of the community awareness program about the hazards of landmines and UXOs, the Sustainable Peace and Development Organization MRE (Mines Risk Education) team in Swat arranged one day training course for the print and electronic media professionals in Swat. The objective of the orientation training was to familiarize the local media professionals regarding mines and UXOs (Unexploded ordnance) and to get their support in strengthening the already initiated campaign at the grass roots level and to develop a strong network of electronic and print media personal in order o perform their role in awareness raising campaign effectively with the aim to reduce the risks of accidents and casualties related to landmines and UXOs by making media an active ally in the awareness campaign.


The workshop was supported by the UNICEF and was technically facilitated by the MRE trained teams of SPADO. The program format was participatory and comprised of awareness sessions on safe behaviors, group discussions and question answers.
Twenty-seven media professionals from various press clubs in District Malakand including Swat, Temagara, Bari Kot, Matta and Chakdara press club attended the training.
The participants appreciated and thanked for the efforts of SPADO in reducing risks and dangers to life posed by landmines and unexploded ordnances. They expressed needs for organizing more such awareness activities and ensured of their full cooperation and support in the humanitarian work to SPADO.
