July 20, 2010: International Youth Summit for Shared Security
Sustainable Peace and Development Organization (SPADO), its Youth for Peace Network and Religions for Peace (RFP), the largest international coalition of representatives from the world’s religions dedicated to promoting peace have organized an international Youth Summit focusing on Disarmament for Shared Security on 20 July in Islamabad. The summit will bring together media, religious scholars, civil society and youth leaders from across Pakistan and key international figures from Religions for Peace (RFP) to discuss importance, opportunities and challenges of such youth-led initiative in Pakistan.
 


The panelists will shed light and discuss the themes:
• Disarmament for Development “The Role of Civil Society”:
• The Role of Religion in Peace-building
• The Role of Media in Peace and Disarmament
• Youth and Peace-building


This summit is an effort to support the Arms Down! campaign -the first global multi-religious youth-led campaign on disarmament for shared security towards achieving following three main objectives:

a. Abolishing nuclear weapons.
b. Stopping the proliferation and misuse of conventional weapons.
c. Reducing military expenditure by 10% to make the achievement of the UN Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) possible by 2015.

Youth across the globe are engaged getting petitions signed for the aforesaid objectives. The target number of petitions is 50,000,000 (fifty million) globally. Signed petitions will be delivered to the United Nations Secretary General, the permanent members of the Security Council, as well as to Heads of State and Members of Parliament in countries.
