On 1 August 2010
the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) will enter into force.
Entry into force is a major milestone for the CCM as it is the day
that the ban takes effect and its obligations become fully and
legally binding on States Parties. The clock will start ticking for
States Parties to meet their obligations, which include:
• declaring and destroying stockpiled cluster munitions within eight
years;
• identifying and clearing cluster munition-contaminated areas
within 10 years; and
• assisting affected communities and cluster munition survivors so
that they can be fully
included in society and enjoy their fundamental human rights.
It also means that as of this day, states will no longer be able to
sign the Convention and instead will need to accede which is
essentially signing and ratifying in one step.
Sustainable Peace and Development Organization represents Pakistan
in the Cluster Munitions Coalition (CMC) on global level and would
be taking part in a worldwide coordinated campaign action to
celebrate this historic milestone for the cause of global
disarmament. SPADO like other CMC will use the occasion as an
opportunity to call on the government to ban cluster bombs. For more
